Are there two different God’s, one of the Old Testament and one of the New Testament?
The God of the Old Testament was a mean God, one of rules and punishments. His was always spiting this one and that, turning people in to pillars of salt, where as the God of the New Testament is a God of love and understanding, willing to sacrifice his only son for us.
So why two Gods?
There are not two Gods, but one, one true God, who through the new and old we see a greater portrait of the one God. We see a God of regulations and a God of forgiveness; we see a God of power and a God who is kind and loving. We see the One God, the God of Abraham Isaac and Joseph. We see a God who loves his children and guides them with a strong had, but always a loving intention, and we see a God willing to forgive the children he loves.
So two Gods, no, one God.
So why the big difference between the two?
In the Old Testament we are yet little children, still in our early development stage. God needed to teach us not to touch the stove, that it was hot, to look both ways before crossing the street. God, in his loving manner, was teaching us then, and now to look both ways, not to touch and to follow the law.
The God of the New Testament is the God growing teens and young adults, we are still in a development stage, but we have matured, we are now better able to decide the path we wish to take, and God is no longer telling us NO, Don’t touch, but rather, after we do touch he is say, See, told you it was hot; Allowing us to burn ourselves as a lesson, but offering us his compassion and tender rebuke, offering us understanding but still demanding obedience.
So to truly see the One True God, you must see the God of Old and The God of New, together as one.
Paul
The Go if the New Testament, exasperated, has determined that his previous course of action, that of smiting the disobedient, was failing in teaching us. No matter how many times we saw his miracles, we ultimately needed to see proof again…and even when he walked among us, as he did with the israelites in the wilderness, we still disobey…
The God of the New Testament has said, “Here is a way. You must choose,” and left it at that…so that by virture of the presentation of this choice, we hold our own fate in our hands.

What you state is true, but what we have to remember is that the old and new testaments are not two differnt Gods, but the revealing of the one same God. That is where it gets tricky….
