I am getting ready for another car trip here, this time is over 6 hours in the car, so I grabbed some new Catholic Talks on CDs, so get ready for a whole new set of blogs praising the CDs.
As a Catholic business owner and still working a 9-5 job to pay the bills, I have found out some interesting things. I pay more attention to the local Catholic radio and other Catholic companies. Here is an interesting fact….
Most companies seem not to want to help out other Catholic companies.
I was listening to one of the two local Catholic Radio stations, they were doing a membership drive. This station was just sold and the new owners and the previous group that ran the Catholic station, for what ever reason, could not come to terms. It was feared that we would lose this station, but the owner approached a local personality that use to run the Catholic station and asked him to come back on and keep the station Catholic. It was a good thing, I liked listening to the station and I was hopeful that he would make a few changes. When he was involved in the station years before he had a drive time show I liked, it mixed politics and religion. My two favorite topics. So I was hopeful.
But instead he went to a format that personally I do not like, it is full of Divine Mercy Devotions. In-of-itself devotions are fine, but I feel they are a personal type of prayer, not one that needs to be on the radio 24/7. But that’s another issue…
When he took over the running of the station I offered my services to him, I offered my talents and products, my talents for free and my products to be used as thank you gifts for membership fees. This radio in a for profit station, so no tax free donations, se he sells advertizing and memberships. I offered my courseware as part of memberships for parishes, that was a parish could support Catholic radio and get a quality educational program to boot.
I sent 2 emails and left 2 voice messages, no returns on any of them. To me, a very non-catholic thing to do. I respond to all who email or call me, even if its to say, thanks but no thanks. I try to support any and all Catholic companies, if they are teaching and promoting the true faith. But it seems to me that some think only they have the true teaching or only they can do it right.
This is not the only example, I have three or 4 more, but will not go into all that. What I expect is not for a company to say, “Oh your Catholic, great lets work together” but rather “Oh, great lets see what we can do, if anything, lets talk, lets look at all possibilities” at least return an email saying sorry, don’t like your stuff or can’t work with you.
When I owned a Catholic book/gift store and was working with this same catholic radio stations, under the previous owners, they would bad mouth this same person who is now running the station, now he is insinuating that the old owners are trying to make him fail. Very un-catholic. Ego is a horrible sin.
I hope and pray that this station remains Catholic, even if I will not listen to it much if he does turn it into a 24/7 divine mercy devotion station. We need more Catholic companies and media.
On a positive note, Catholic TV just signed a deal with Comcast, so it will me going national on cable, that’s a positive. And our other Catholic radio station is going strong (this is the membership drive week, so only time will tell).
As for me, I am always on the look out for other Catholic companies to team up with, to make my product better and to work with others on other Catholic projects. I think the Catholic community of businesses need to work as one, we need to join forces and help each other out, because in the end, we will all win.
